What's a Domain Name?

A domain name is basically the address of your website. www.Yahoo.com is one example. It is the "address" on the internet where you would find the website, Yahoo.com, if one exists. Each domain name is "unique" in the sense that there is only one. As a result, no matter where you are in the world, if a Domain Name has already been bought, it will be too late for you to get it. Somebody will already own that "address."

Is a Domain Name the same thing as a website?

No.  An example will help.  The domain name is the "address" where your "house" (the website) will be located if you build one.  Some people in the real world buy an address as an investment or for proprietary reasons without intending to build anything there. It works the same way in the internet world. And in those cases, if people type in that Domain Name, they see nothing on the internet.  If you do want people to see a 'house' (website) when they type in your 'address' (domain name), then you have to build one -- OR you can link to an existing one FOR FREE. That's called Domain Forwarding. It means people type in your Domain Name and they get forwarded directly to an already existing website. For many corporate executives or school officials or journalists, this is the perfect option.  You get your Name as a .com Domain Name -- preserving a powerful asset for you -- and in the meantime, you can make it so people who go to your Domain Name get forwarded to the page about you that already exists on your company or school or publication's website.   The result? You get Your Name and you get the benefits of having a website without any additional cost of money or time.

Is the domain name cost the only cost to owning a Domain Name?

Yep, that's it. If you want, you can lock up a Domain Name for more than one year at a time, and if you do that, it will obviously cost more. And again, you can also decide to get a website which will cost more (unless you get a free-server type)
