YOUR CHILD'S NAME AS A .COM DOMAIN NAME: AN INVESTMENT THAT'S LITERALLY ONE OF A KIND
Do your kids need a website yet? Of course not, but it still may be a good investment to get their Name as a Domain Name upon which a website can be built when you feel they are old enough. What makes Domain Names so particularly unique is that Domain Names are not like, say, cars or gym shoes where two kids named Bob Johnson can have the same ones. Domain Names are literally one of a kind. So only one Bob Johnson in the world can have www.bobjohnson.com -- which means if anyone else in the World shares your child's Name and snaps up the Domain Name first, it will be too late for your child to use their Name as a .com Domain Name and all the wonderful possibilities that come with that. If your child has a name shared by someone else or many someone else's in the world, that's something to think about. And here's why:
10 or 20 years ago, people began getting email addresses. In the next 10 or 20 years, it appears the trend may well be having your own Domain Name addresses -- truly being the master of your own Domain. It is already starting to happen -- and not just with celebrities. Everybody from 60 year old stockbrokers to 35 year old scientists to 18 year old college students have been making their Name their own!
Getting your child's name now, for just $9 a year, allows it to be there for them when you feel they are old enough to use it, and at that point, the possibilities of what they could do with it are truly endless. Whether they become a famous superstar and want to promote their next album or just want to put up a simple website to show pictures from college, their wedding or their 50th anniversary, they'll have a destination with their name on it -- literally -- for people to go to. And in the meantime, while they're growing up, you can link their Domain Name to the website of their favorite show or movie. Think of how fun it is for a child to type in their name and see Superman or Barney or (insert their favorite character) pop up on the screen - or for that matter, as they get older, their favorite author or business icon's website.

If your child's Name as a .com Domain Name is available when they are old enough to put up a website, no matter what they do with their life, that .com Domain Name can prove to be a powerful asset to strengthen their own personal brand. Click on How Can I Use My Name? to see just a few examples.
Unfortunately, depending on how common their Name is, their .com Domain Name might not be there for them if you wait until then to get it. The fact is some of us and some of our children are bound to have the same Names as complete strangers halfway across the country. And yet, there can be no two .com Domain Names exactly alike. Only one Bob Smith in the world can have www.BobSmith.com
If you don't get your child's Name as a Domain Name today, does it mean someone else will? As already mentioned, that depends largely on how many people share your child's name. The more people who have the same name as your child, the more likely the .com version of their Domain Name will be gone by the time they are old enough to use it.
Will it ruin their life if that happens? It's safe to say they'll survive just fine. But if they did have it, there really is an endless list of positive things they could have done with it. And if you feel that they have a name common enough that might get taken by someone else who shares it, the only way to guarantee your child's .com Domain Name is available for them to explore those possibilities when they are old enough is to get it yourself and hold onto it for them until that day comes.
