SAFETY ON THE INTERNET

If you do purchase a Domain Name and if and when you do build a website and have it hosted on that Domain Name, it is very important to keep Safety on the Internet foremost on your mind.

As you know, IdeaList Enterprises Inc. and its Internet Division, WorldsGreatestName.com, are completely uninvolved in the programming of your website if you build one, but we are interested in keeping the world a safer place and offer up a few common sense ideas to consider.  In receiving these thoughts and recommendations from us, you verify you understand that these are not foolproof nor are they comprehensive and that you and you alone are responsible for looking into other thoughts and recommendations from those who are experienced and trusted to help keep you safe on the Internet.  These are just a few of the things you need to keep in mind when putting a website up online:

If privacy is a concern, you should strongly consider reading up on getting a 'Private Listing' when ordering your Domain Name. But either way, we strongly encourage you to not publish your private contact information such as home address and personal phone numbers directly on your new website - and depending on your age, or your child's age, avoid posting where they go to school or even the city where you live.  People who know you who visit the site will know where you live - there's no need to remind them. And if you do publicly list the Domain Name, people can find that information if they need it without seeing it so readily on your website.

Only post information about yourself and pictures of yourself on your website that you are comfortable with others seeing. Whether the whole world goes to your website is irrelevant. The point is they can. If you are concerned about safety or privacy if people see pictures on your website, simply do not pictures on your website at all.

Be especially cautious, considerate and mindful when posting information and pictures of others, if you post anything about anyone else at all. Whether the whole world goes to your website is irrelevant. The point is they can.

Do not carelessly slander anyone. A website is not a joke.  They can experience the same damage, perhaps even more, as if you wrote it on a bathroom wall.

Do not post inappropriate, illegal or otherwise irresponsible pictures. What you think is 'daring' today (ie a picture of you and your spouse, thinking only the two of you will go to the website) can turn into something you will regret forever if the wrong person stumbles onto the website and sees them.

Be extremely cautious about identity theft.  If you post enough personal identifying information about yourself, somebody may take that information and try to be you in the real world.  How likely is that? Who knows.  But it's better to be safe than sorry.

If your website is used for business purposes, you may well receive emails from people you do not know.  Be cautious if and when you respond.  If your website is used for personal use only, you should probably only be receiving emails from family, friends and friends of family & friends.  So be especially cautious if and when responding to people you do not know who contact you-- even if they claim to be the friend of a friend. Don't forget they may claim to be someone who they just saw on your very own website.  And never agree to meet alone, if at all, in the real world with someone who contacted you online or through your website and now attempts to befriend you or do business with you in person.

Never give out your account or password information to anyone.

Do not knowingly purchase someone else's Name or Company Name as a Domain Name with the sole intention of attempting to sell it to them or elsewhere for a higher fee.

Do not knowingly purchase a Domain Name with the intention of building a website on it that engages in illegal, inappropriate or highly immoral activity.

If you are purchasing a Domain Name for someone under 18, or for your own children regardless of their age, and you are purchasing the Domain Name for them to ensure nobody else gets it so the child can have the Domain Name and put up a website once you feel they are old enough to do so -- then do that. Get the Domain Now, then wait - patiently. DO NOT put up a website about them, or allow them to put up a website, at that Domain Name until you feel they are old enough to do so. Simply hold the Domain Name, like an investment, until you are comfortable they are old enough to be out there in the Internet World. (It's probably a good idea to not even tell the child the Domain Name has been purchased so they don't pressure you to let them put up a website before you feel it is appropriate!)

If the Domain Name and website are for a child or your child, regardless of their age, if you feel at some point they are old enough for it to be safe and appropriate for them to put up a website, read this List of Tips with them and discuss these Tips with them and then revisit them with them on a regular basis. And make sure they understand these Tips -- and any other Tips you acquire from trusted Internet Experts -- before beginning to build a website at their Domain Name.

If the Domain Name and website are for a child or your child, regardless of their age, strongly consider setting it up so that the website only offers one email address for people to contact -- and have those emails directed to you instead of your child. You then have the discretion of forwarding them to your child or filtering them out.

If the Domain Name and website are for a child or your child, regardless of their age, make a point of looking at their website online on a regular, ongoing basis. If you see anything remotely inappropriate, or anything you find potentially too revealing about private information or contact information or location, have them take it off the website immediately -- or take it down yourself-- and then discuss with them why you did so to help increase the chances they do not repeat the same mistake.

And again, come back to this site on a regular basis to be aware of any changes or additions to the Safety Tips, What Else I Should Know or other relevant sections.

And remember that this is just one List of Ideas so talk to people you trust and who are experienced internet users to gain different perspectives and to help you develop a more thorough list of ideas and precautions before you put your website online-- and keep those ideas in mind whenever you are updating your website!  Always be safe instead of sorry when deciding what to put on a website.
